We are a friendly, independent evangelical Christian church.

Evangelical AllianceWe belong to the Evangelical Alliance, and fully support its Statement of Faith.

For those who want "religious jargon" to be explained more fully:

"Independent": we do not belong to a Christian "denomination" (such as "Church of England" or "Baptist Union")
"Evangelical": we believe and teach Christian truths as taught in the Bible.  The EA Statement of Faith (see top of page) is a good description of "evangelical" beliefs.
"Church":  in the New Testament, the word "church" is used to translate the Greek word "ekklesia", which meant "assembly".  The church is the people who meet together - not the building which we use!

THE CHRISTIAN FAITH - the whole story, in brief

1. GOD
There is a God - a personal, almighty Creator.  He alone is eternal and absolute, and made the universe from nothing, because he chose to.  So there is the eternal, everlasting God, the creator, and then there are created things (including us) made by him, and now kept going and ruled over by him.

2. HUMANITY
He made the human race good to start with, but there was a rebellion and now we are part of a fallen race.  Evil is not just out there in the world’s structures, but we all have it in our very natures; and we've also done plenty of bad things as well.
You see, the good and holy God says we should love him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and should love our neighbours (everyone we come across!) as ourselves.  He's also given norms for how we should behave in his world - in areas like respect for human life, sex and marriage, others' property, truthful speech, etc.
Now it's obvious that we don't by nature love God supremely, and that on this and other matters we are all law-breakers before him.  And he for his part is rightly angry with us.  So we are alienated from him, there is a breach between us and him, which has led, long term, to all our other problems.  And we're stuck in this situation, facing his future judgment.

3. ISRAEL
God is good and holy and just, and hates our sin.  But he is also loving, and soon after the rebellion he promised that someone born of woman would graciously rectify the situation.  He then chose one man, Abraham, and promised to be his God and also to give him many descendants and a good place to live, and that all nations would in the end be blessed through his offspring.  His descendants, Israel, were rescued by God from slavery in Egypt and blessed in many ways, though not deserving it.  They were given a land, and priests and prophets and kings, but they kept turning away from God.  None of these descendants of Abraham was good enough to save the world.

4. CHRIST
Many years later God sent his unique Son, who is also God (so God the Father sent God the Son), Jesus Christ, born as a real human being, of the line of Abraham and king David.  God sent him to die for our sins and guilt, and to liberate us from them and from the devil, and in the end from death as well.  Jesus of Nazareth was anointed with the Holy Spirit and power, and went around doing good and healing the sick and oppressed.  The Jewish and Roman authorities united to put him to death on a cross, but he rose again on the third day and was seen by many.  He is now Lord, supreme ruler over the universe.  One day he will return in person to consummate his saving kingdom and judge all who have ever lived.

5. SALVATION BY FAITH
For now, he offers (through his message in the Bible) “salvation” to all who will turn to him and receive him as their Saviour and Lord.  Salvation means

  • being forgiven and reconciled to God immediately
  • receiving a new life in the Holy Spirit - fellowship with God, and the desire and strength to live for him
  • receiving a ticket or entitlement to eternal glory - triumph over death in the coming bodily resurrection, vindication on the awesome day of judgment, and a place with God in the renewed cosmos, where we will glorify him perfectly, enjoy him and his restored creation, and live in love and harmony with the vast company of  those redeemed by Christ, for ever.

Do you see your need of Jesus Christ?  If so, you can see from the above that the key thing is to become rightly related to him - by turning from a life lived your own way in your own strength and for yourself, to Christ as Lord.  Submit completely to him and you will receive a new life.
In seeking after a living relationship with Christ, it can be very helpful to read through one of the 4 authoritative accounts (Gospels) of him in the New Testament - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
