Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to questions which we are asked by those who are considering a visit to us.  These are the mundane details! - for the important issues, see our other pages, for example:

WHAT we believe
WHO Jesus Christ is

How big is Wilton Community Church? .
How accessible is it for the disabled? There is a ramp for wheelchair access at the entrance, and no steps.
If I visit your church, what should I wear? What you wear isn't important!  We meet to worship God, so we try to dress modestly and reverently, as our attention is focussed on God, not on one another.  The older men may prefer to wear ties; the younger ones are "smart casual".  We don't impose any rules about whether women should wear hats (or other head-covering) or not.
I don't often go to church.  How will I know when to stand up, when to sit down, and so on? The person leading the service usually tells you.  If he forgets, watch the people around you.  Don't be afraid to ask someone near you - they'll be glad to help.
Do I have to pay to go to church? No.  But most of us who attend this (or any other) church, want to offer something to God in return for what He has done for us by sending Jesus.  So in our church there is a box for those who wish to, to leave financial gifts, but nobody comes round to "collect money".  Those who give regularly and are taxpayers can get the tax-man to add to their gifts by Gift Aid via Tax-Efficient Giving schemes.
Is there a loop system for those with hearing aids? Not at present.  But our building is small and speakers and singers are amplified.
Which version of the Bible do you use? Normally (but not exclusively) the New International Version.  Copies of this version are given out as we enter the church.
What sort of hymns/songs do you sing? Hymns and songs mostly from "Worship Today+" and "Mission Praise".  For some, we use an Overhead Projector, but individual copies of "Mission Praise" are also used.  We all take part in the singing, although we are led by a small group of singers in case we aren't too sure about the tunes.
+:  This is a collection of 500 hymns and songs compiled in about 2001 by "Spring Harvest", the annual Eastertide gathering of British Christians.
Do you use musical instruments? We normally use a keyboard (piano/organ sound) plus one guitar, but no drums.
How structured are your services? They are varied and informal, but planned and led.  When praying, we talk to God our Heavenly Father rather than using written forms of words.
Is the church "charismatic"? Not really but our services are open and informal
Is there translation into any languages besides English? Not at present.
