Christian organisations
which some of our own members are involved with
London Theological Seminary.
Local to us, in Finchley N3.
Oak Hill Theological
College. Also local to us, in Cockfosters.
Christians at Work. Helping to mobilise Christians to live
out their faith in the world of work: establishing and supporting Workplace
groups; encouraging individuals as they serve Jesus in their daily work and
shine as lights for Him amongst their colleagues and customers; challenging
local churches to remember that the secular workplace is a "mission
field" just as much as being a "missionary" abroad; and providing
resources.
Christian Solidarity Worldwide.
A non-denominational Christian charity which works for the religious liberty of
persecuted Christians, helping others suffering repression, children in need and
disaster victims throughout the world.
Soul in the City. Thousands
of young people are to converge on Greater London for 12 days of co-ordinated
activity, established in partnership with local churches, from 26 July 2004 to 6
August 2004. Find out more at this website.
Wycliffe Associates. A
support ministry for Christian workers abroad, providing practical help such as
"keyboarding" (transferring draft Bible translations onto
computer). Their web-site includes free software games which give some
insight into missionary work abroad.
Wycliffe
Bible Translators. More than merely translating the Bible: they may be
the first workers to put a spoken language into writing - and, after part of the
Bible has been translated and printed, the people need to be taught to read
their own language. (Our link is to the UK branch; for the worldwide HQ
website, click here.)
InterServe.
An international and interdenominational
fellowship of Christians committed to each other in partnership and for service
to the peoples of Asia and the Arab World. Founded in 1852.
The Messianic Testimony.
Working among Jewish people in various countries to show them that Jesus, who
was Himself born a Jew, is their long-foretold Messiah. They have a useful
online bookshop.
Here are just a few suggestions. With all teaching, the Bible says
"weigh what is said", checking for yourself whether the Bible confirms
it, as the devout people in Berea were commended for doing (Acts 17: 11-12).
There are several schemes which enable tax-payers to give to a single account
with one organisation, which handles all reclamation of tax and then provides vouchers and a plastic "charity
card" to enable donations to be made to charities and full-time Christian
workers. They can usually arrange regular standing orders as well as
one-off gifts.
Sovereign Giving:
www.sogive.org.uk
In our experience, this charged the lowest administration fee of the 3 organisations listed here.
But from 1st July 2004, they have merged with Stewardship Services.
Stewardship
Services:
www.stewardshipservices.org/gs_include_ssaccnt.asp
This one is particularly well-organised for giving to full-time Christian
workers who are not employed by registered charities (for example, itinerant
preachers).
Charities Aid Foundation: www.cafonline.org/individual/best/default.cfm
This one is a secular organisation, much larger than the other two, and with
higher admin charges because it uses its profits to do pioneering work with
newly-forming charities in Eastern Europe and the developing world.
